Fort Macon State Park on the western end of the island is perhaps the area’s most-loved attraction for families. The historic Civil War fort is now an extensive museum honoring the rich history of the war and the battles that took place on the island. Soldiers’ quarters have been remodeled into displays and showcases of memorabilia and events, each with a built-in narration that begins with the touch of a button. Dark and ominous prison cells are open for all to explore, guided tours are given throughout the day, and a newly-remodeled gift shop offers countless treasures that celebrate the site. Fort Macon is also has a very popular public beach access, complete with a gazebo, snack bar, and lifeguard service.
