Fort Macon State Park on the western end of the island is perhaps the area’s most-loved attraction for families.  The historic Civil War fort is now an extensive museum honoring the rich history of the war and the battles that took place on the island.  Soldiers’ quarters have been remodeled into displays and showcases of memorabilia and events, each with a built-in narration that begins with the touch of a button.  Dark and ominous prison cells are open for all to explore, guided tours are given throughout the day, and a newly-remodeled gift shop offers countless treasures that celebrate the site.  Fort Macon is also has a very popular public beach access, complete with a gazebo, snack bar, and lifeguard service.

Throughout the summer, classes and activities are provided several times each day – enroll today and join in on the excitement!  Immediately ahead of the Atlantic Beach bridge, you’ll find an area that locals call “The Circle.”  Home to a variety of local vendors and restaurants, it’s quite possibly the most popular beach access in town.  Marked by the Atlantic Beach water tower, it cannot be missed.  If you’re in town for Independence Day, you’ll want to be here for the fireworks!
